Microchipping

If your pet isn’t microchipped, we highly recommend they have one implanted. Having a pet recovery plan in place greatly increases the chances of them making it back home safely if they get lost. It might be difficult to think about your pet getting lost but microchipping can help ease your worries if they ever do.

Is microchipping like a GPS?

Microchips are tiny radio transponders, transmitting radio waves when a handheld device is passed over them. It’s the only way to detect if your pet has one implanted. Though it doesn’t provide an exact location of your pet, it does give us your information so you can be contacted once they’re found. How is it implanted?

We use a needle to implant the microchip under your pet’s skin, between their shoulder blades. They’re usually no bigger than a rice grain. The process only takes a few minutes and your furry friend doesn’t need to be sedated or go under anesthesia. Typically, we can also implant them during your pet’s surgical procedures. Each microchip is registered with a pet recovery database, which includes your contact information. If you change your address or phone number, it’s important to share your new details with us so we can keep it up-to-date.

How long does a microchip last?

One microchip will last your pet’s lifetime. Even though microchipping is permanent pet identification, it shouldn’t be the only one you depend on. The more types you combine, the higher the chances your pet will be returned if they’re lost. For example, collars and tags are other great forms of pet ID you can use along with microchips. Ensure you’ve included up-to-date contact information on tags and collars as well.
